The Under Graduate course in Geography (B.Sc., Geography) was introduced during the year 1968-69, which was the same year the college was also started. During that time, as the college was the Men's College, only the male students were admitted for this course. However the Government of Tamil Nadu ordered to convert all Men's Colleges into Co-educational College during the year 1997-98. Following this order, our College came forward to offer courses to both Men and Women from that year onwards. The Post Graduate course in Geography (M.Sc., Geography) was introduced in 2012-13 academic year.
The main objectives of the Department are:
To impart physical, cultural and social related knowledge at under graduate and post graduate levels by a judicious mix of theory and practical aspects,
To impart knowledge in conventional, recent concepts and applications in various areas of Geography,
To train the students in various practical aspects of Geography through field study, and
To provide wide choice of elective subjects which are relevant with updated and new areas in various branches of Geography to meet the needs of all students.
For effective teaching, the Department is equipped with modern teaching aids like Smart Board and LCD Projector. The Department has a well-equipped Cartography and GIS Laboratories. These include Survey of India Topographic sheets of various States on 1:250,000, 1:50,000 and 1:63,360 scales. There are number of surveying equipments like Chain, Plane Table, Dumpy Levels, Clinometers, Prismatic Compasses etc. The PG Laboratory has two Desktop computers (with high configuration) installed with various open source GIS and Image Processing software. The Department has acquired modern tools like Digital Planimeter, Mirror Stereoscopes, Pocket Stereoscopes and Hand held GPS receivers. The students are well trained to use these instruments and software as part of their curriculum.
Presently the faculty strength of the Department is five (Permanent - 1 & Guest Lecturers - 4) and offers courses B.Sc. Geography and M.Sc. Geography. The faculty members are actively involved in academic and research activities, and disseminate their findings through publications in terms of research papers in National and International journals, books and presentation in conferences, seminars and workshops.
A Special Lecture programme was organized by the Department on 20-02-2018 and Dr. V. Thangamani, Assistant Professor, Department of Geography, Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai was the invited resource person and he has presented a topic entitled Employment Opportunities for Geography Students. At the beginning, the Welcome Address was delivered by Dr. K. Panneerselvan, Associate Professor, Department of Geography, and the presidential address was delivered by our Principal Dr. A. Leela Glory Bai. At last, Mr. P. Sudarasolan, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Geography concluded the programme by delivering the vote of thanks.
The Department has conducted the State Level 8th Talent Test - Young Geographer - 2018 under the supervision of Mr. P. Sundarasolan, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Geography on 21-02-2018. The final year students of UG and PG Geography courses were the eligible candidates to attend the Test and it was organized by The Indian Geographical Society (IGS), Department of Geography, University of Madras, Chennai.
The Department of Geography has conducted the Inter-Collegiate Geography Quiz Contest for the geography students (Under Graduate programme) of Periyar University affiliated colleges. The competition was conducted on 23.02.2018. In this competition, the students of Government Arts College for Men, Salem, won the first position followed by the Arignar Anna Government Arts College, Namakkal with second position and the third position went to Sri Vijay Vidyalaya Arts and Science College, Dharmapuri. The Quiz competition was conducted by Mr. P. Sundarasolan, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Geography and the Principal of our College Dr. A. Leela Glory Bai distributed the prizes to the students. At last, Dr. K. Panneerselvan, Associate Professor, Department of Geography has delivered the vote of thanks.

The State Level 10th Talent Test - Young Geographer - 2020 was conducted under the supervision of Mr. P. Sundarasolan, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Geography on 22-01-2020. The final year students of UG and PG Geography courses were the eligible candidates to attend the Test and it was organized by The Indian Geographical Society (IGS), Department of Geography, University of Madras, Chennai.
The Department of Economics conducted workshop on “Awareness on Financial Education – Financial planning for Young investors” on 23.08.2017. This workshop was sponsored by the Security Exchange Board of India (SEBI). Dr. N. Chandrasekaran, member All India NAAC Peer Team and farmer principal of Kandaswami Kandar’s College, Velur, Namakkal district delivered address on the topic.
